Interesting History on the Pharaoh Hounds
When you look at the Pharaoh hound, you see a cross between a Doberman pinscher and a Terrier. These dogs are outstanding in appearance and they will be sure to capture anyone’s attention. So where did these dogs come from? What country did they originate from? There are dogs found in the Nile Valley that have similar appearances to the Pharaoh hound. These date back to 3000 BC in Ancient Egypt. It is thought that these dogs were left on isolated islands where they began to breed amongst themselves for over a hundred years.
The Pharaoh hound is perhaps one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds. The dog looks a lot like the Egyptian Jackal god Anubis, which was known for being the ruler of the underworld. The Pharaoh hound was a great hunting dog for the Egyptians and the historians have learned this through the paintings and hieroglyphics that were left behind by the Ancient Egyptians.
The Pharaoh hound translated in Maltese “Kelb-tal Fenek simply means rabbit hound and that is just what they liked to hunt. In Ancient Egyptian tombs like the tomb chapel of Senbi, you will find markings of these dogs. The Pharaoh hounds have been around for thousands of years and they will continue with their popularity. Records have indicated that the Pharaoh hound came into England around the 1930’s and in 1967; the Pharaoh hound was introduced to the United States.
